However, many people either forget to take care of their mental health while on the job or are unaware of how to do so. Here are three ways that employees can improve their mental health and wellness while at work.
- Delegate Tasks
Over a period of time, stress can take a toll on mental health, potentially causing issues such as severe anxiety and depression. When an employee begins to feel stressed and overwhelmed due to having too many things to work on, it is a good idea for them to delegate some of their job duties to other capable workers. For example, more simple tasks can go to a newer or less experienced employee, freeing up time for the overwhelmed employee to work on higher-level projects.
If the company allows, workers can also take advantage of generative AI software to help them deliver on their tasks. Artificial intelligence can, for example, help programmers write code and assist artists in coming up with ideas for their work. However, employees should be aware of their company’s policies on using AI for work.

There are many people who struggle with low self-esteem, including being unsure about whether or not they can perform their job duties. Feelings of stress, sadness and anxiousness are common among employees and may indicate the presence of a more serious mental health condition. There is no reason for anyone to feel ashamed or embarrassed for seeking out help; rather, seeking help is a difficult step to take and should be applauded.
Many large employers provide mental health services to their employees for free or at a low cost, and employers should encourage workers to take advantage of those services if needed. Some of the services that might be available include:
- Hotlines to call, where employees can talk to professionals who may be familiar with the particular industry that the employee works for
- Access to mental health counselors, who employees can see on a confidential, regular basis for a certain amount of time
- Support groups consisting of other people who are going through the same or similar issues as the one the employee seeking help is experiencing
There are many reasons why an employee might seek professional assistance for mental health matters. Whether the matter relates to work or not, employees should find out what types of help their employers offer.
- Get Outside
If someone works a job that requires them to sit for most of the day, they can start to feel restless from being at the computer and in the same room all day, almost every day of the week. Because of this, it is important that those workers make a point to get up and move around for a little bit during the workday. Being outside, in particular, provides benefits to mental health such as:
- A greater sense of calm
- A boost of creativity
- An improvement in mood
One good option, if possible, is for someone to set aside a portion of their lunch break to walk around outside. It is even better if they take that walk with a friend or coworker since socializing is also great for boosting mental wellness. Even people who perform less sedentary jobs can benefit from being outside for a few minutes during their breaks.
It is important for people to pay attention to their mental health and well-being regardless of where they are or what they are doing. Fortunately, there are many ways to improve mental wellness while at work.
