There is every chance that you’re reading this article with a heavy heart and a tired mind. Marriages are hard work, but there comes a time in some marriages where you both need to realize that you’ve done everything you can to save it – but it’s over.

Getting to that point can be quick, or it can be a long and arduous process. However you get to the point of waving your white flag, take the time to read up about the five most common misconceptions about divorce.

The more you know, the more you can protect your rights and the rights of your children. You all deserve to move on and be happy, and that can be possible – you need to take a step back and assess the situation before it degrades to the point of no return.

The five most common misconceptions are listed below, so take the time to go through them and do your best to avoid the ones you can:

  1. Divorce Ends In a 50/50 Split

That is possibly the most common misconception surrounding tales of divorce. Your marriage won’t necessarily end fairly and it largely depends on how both of you handle it. Try to remember that you once had so much love for the other person, so despite your current feelings, you need to keep your emotions in check.

Don’t act out of spite, especially if there are children involved – they do not need to pay the price for your relationship meltdown.

  1. Divorces Have To Be Messy

Despite what most movies teach you, not every divorce has to be an ugly mess. Many couples who mutually conclude that their relationship is over are completely capable of ending things maturely and fairly.

Instead of dragging things out and escalating the situation, try to stay calm and collected throughout the process. It will be over before you know it, so don’t act out because of a temporary situation.

  1. All Divorce Lawyers Are Sharks

If you are trying to get a Chicago divorce, you need to hire an experienced divorce lawyer. That does not mean that you will automatically get a heartless shark that is just out to make money off of your mutual marital misery.
Most divorce lawyers are kind and caring people, but they do have a job to do so don’t misunderstand their purpose – they are not your therapist.

  1. The Mother Automatically Gets Custody

It is true that in almost 80% of the cases, the mother will get custody of the children. That does not mean that the state will automatically award custody to the mother – that will depend on several factors.

In many cases, the spouses agree on who would be better for the kids, and in other cases, the court will decide.

  1. You Don’t Need a Lawyer

This one isn’t strictly a misconception – you don’t legally need a lawyer to get divorced, but you should have one because you won’t know what you’re doing. That isn’t an insult; it’s just a cold, hard fact.

You likely won’t want your divorce to be a long or drawn-out process and hiring an experienced lawyer is the best way to prevent that.
