Be yourself in a world full of haters. It’s the tougher option for sure. It’s so much easier to give in to peer pressure, to want to people please and be liked by everyone. We all know though, you can’t please everyone all of the time – it’s impossible. So, the only logical thing to do is be who you really are. As long are you aren’t a narcissistic psychopath, you’re bound to find people who will like you just as you are.
How wonderful is it to be true to who you really are and have people like you! When we put on an act, we reinforce the message to ourselves that our ‘essential self’ (the person we were born to be) isn’t acceptable. This leads to all sorts of problems – lowered self confidence, lower self belief and low self esteem. Be brave, ignore the haters and be true to you. Speak up for what you believe in, dye your hair green and silver if that’s what works for you. You don’t owe anyone an explanation. We are conditoned from the day we are born to fit in, be conventional, say “please” and “thank you” and generally tow the line. Boring! Be less conditioned. Research done with people who were at their end of their lives showed that a high percentage wished that they had been themselves more and not tried to please everyone else so much.
It’s not a question of being selfish but it is about honouring who you really want to be in this life. Let’s be united in our differences. Stop being afraid to say what you want to say or do what you really want to do. We avoid what we fear and it’s true that many of us sacrifice what we really want in order to keep the peace and be liked. We’re afraid to raise our heads above the parapet in case we get fired at. Thing is, when you actually brave and stick your head out, you’ll realise it’s not that bad.
As long as you are merely expressing your individuality and you aren’t harming anyone else, why shouldn’t you? Think of me cheering you on in the background with my pom poms!
Get out there, be true to you and ignore the haters. They won’t change, they are projecting their inner misery on to others. See their anger for what it is – an inner glimpse of how unhappy they must be.
Besides, you don’t need me to be your cheerleader. You can be your own cheerleader. Believe in yourself, follow your heart!
