Life Shocks

This is a brilliant book with an inspiring message. It helps to explain how we can overcome difficulties in life. Sophie Sabbage explains a very personal story and elucidates the difference between three kinds of lifeshocks we all receive: limiting lifeshocks which challenge our arrogance and appetite for control; exposing lifeshocks which challenge our affectations and pretences; and evoking lifeshocks which challenge our closed-heartedness.

A great read!

Just as a stream peacefully wanders through the natural world, over, around, or between rocks, Rock and Water provides skills that can help you navigate through the obstacles of life. Author Scott Cooper introduces 18 basic skills for enhancing and sustaining happiness that will uphold and carry inner peace and happiness from one day to the next — skills that are based on Scott Cooper’s research in the fields of cognitive psychology and mindfulness/acceptance. Cognitive psychology is grounded in the theory that our happiness is strongly influenced by our thinking. It’s not so much a situation that brings unhappiness, but rather our perception of a situation. Mindfulness/acceptance practice is grounded in applying more nonreactive acceptance to daily living; particularly when it comes to daily dilemmas that we can’t control. In this new book, Rock and Water maintains the strong point of view that happiness is not enhanced by more talk about happiness, but by applying these conscious -hands-on- techniques that help us to cope with the inner sources of unhappiness—- this is the core of what cognitive and acceptance-based skills are all about.

Man’s Search For Meaning: The classic tribute to hope from the Holocaust  (I love this book!)

This book had a profound impact upon me and I refer to it often in my sessions with clients. It is an extreme example of the human spirit and shows how we can overcome harsh realities by changing the way we look at it.

Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl’s memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of others he treated later in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

The Power Is Within You

My first self help book ever was a Louise Hay book “You can heal your life”. Ever since then I have always felt that Louise was ahead of her time. I recommend all her books but this one is another of my all time favourites. Louise encourages us to think of ourselves in terms of positives – what we do, not what we don’t; what we know, not what we don’t; what we are, not what we aren’t.

Tuesdays With Morrie: An old man, a young man, and life’s greatest lesson (could NOT put this book down)

Knowing he was dying of ALS – or motor neurone disease – Mitch visited Morrie in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled relationship turned into one final ‘class’: lessons in how to live.
