Discover the Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Relationships Is (Mostly) Wrong
When trying to improve a marriage, we usually think too much about fixing problems. Yeah, it can help but believing that merely reducing the negatives in a marriage will make it great is a myth at the level of “Santa Claus is watching you” or “I’ll use calculus in real life.”
We all know couples who have plenty of problems yet manage to make it work. How? Because a happy marriage isn’t threatened by the raw amount of bad stuff. It’s about the ratio of good-to-bad…
From Plays Well With Others:
What keeps romantic relationships happy? John Gottman found it was a 5:1 ratio of positive events to negative events. As long as you have enough good times to offset the bad, a relationship can thrive.
You cannot nerf your marriage against all the bad stuff. Even reducing the negatives to zero doesn’t necessarily lead to bliss and joy – it could just end up neutral. So don’t just fix problems; increase the positives. Research shows this is often more important than reducing the negatives.
Do exciting stuff together. People think they went on cool dates early in their relationship because they were in love – but research shows the reverse is true as well: you fell in love because you did fun stuff together. Go to concerts. Spend more time on roller coasters. Dance like you’re trying to turn your automatic ceiling lights back on. This is what keeps love alive.

A Bootstrapper’s Bible to Social Media Millions
Many employees tolerate working jobs they hate. They tough it out. They grin and bear it.
And most who start businesses have to accumulate all kinds of debt and keep putting money into their business instead of taking it out.
They go into business only to find out they’ve jumped out of the frying pan into the fire. They wind up slaves to their business. Their business owns them… controlling their lives and dictating their happiness… they don’t own the business.
The worst part is when they wind up working longer, harder hours for the same money they were making in their jobs. Trapped and hating their lives.

The book covers the personal stories of individuals who had to cope with parental mental illness and the impact this has had on them. It’s a book that is close to my heart as I grew up with a mother who had a mental illness and vulnerable children are often affected for the rest of their lives by their parent’s mental illness. This book refers to an amazing organisation called Ourtime that supports children and helps them to achieve their potential despite their early challenging environments. Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl’s memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of others he treated later in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

Knowing he was dying of ALS – or motor neurone disease – Mitch visited Morrie in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled relationship turned into one final ‘class’: lessons in how to live.
