Impatience is a virtue

I was very ill when I was 26 years old. A sudden blood disorder called Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP for short) struck and I became very ill. So ill in fact, that I ended up in Intensive Care on a ventilator. The blood disorder attacks the platelets and makes your blood clot randomly and creates serious damage in the body. I had a seizure and had blood transfusions to try clean my blood. I then developed pneumonia and my kidneys failed. Thankfully I don’t remember too much about it now. It’s almost as if I am talking about a movie I once watched. I lost loads of weight and lost all my hair too. It was a tough time and the doctors didn’t think I would pull through.

Having experienced a serious threat to my health woke me up to the temporary nature of life. Yes, we all know it but we ignore it. We carry on as life is forever and waste precious time doing things we hate doing, spending time with people we don’t enjoy being with. Some of that is unavoidable but this is why impatience is a virtue. When you realise that time is finite – you become more selective about the quality of your life. You don’t wait ages to do things and you tell people what you really think and feel instead of waiting for a moment that may never come.

Be more impatient in your life. Of course, everything is about balance and pushing impatience to the extreme won’t be useful either. See people, do things you’ve been delaying – get on with it. There’s no time like the present!
