Freedom is more a state of mind that a physical or geographical concept. We all hold self limiting beliefs and I tend to find the more judgemental a person is of others, the more ‘in chains’ they tend to be themselves. If you engage in black and white thinking, you will have many rules for how life should be. This places unnecessary restrictions on how we live and can lead us to feel trapped in our lives. We have the power to change this thinking and adopt alternative thoughts that allow us to live a free life.
Free yourself from the rules you have adopted. Do you have any rules for living? They often take the form if “if this…then that”. For example: If I say no then I won’t be liked. Challenge your rules and adopt new ones that make sense and free you from rigid living. Reject that inner critic telling you that you aren’t good enough, that makes you seek approval. You don’t need it – you can approve of yourself. Forget what others think… that’s freedom – living a life that is true to you.
So what is freedom to you?
There are four elements to freedom:
- Having the ability to be flexible and do what you want to do
- Being able to be true to yourself and achieve the best possible you
- Being independent and self reliant
- The ability to have purpose and give back to the world
Make a plan to get closer to your version of freedom. Does it mean you need to challenge your rules for living more often? Does it mean you need to be more assertive to live a life true to you. Don;t be afraid to stand up for yourself. You don’t need approval from others. Be self aware and uncover where you may be avoiding paths to freedom…take baby steps..you can do it, you can have more personal freedom.
