People associate gazing at themselves in the mirror with being vain and prideful. However, there’s nothing wrong with taking a look at yourself every now and again. There’s nothing wrong with appreciating yourself and everything that you do, and that’s why mirror gazing has become more popular in recent times. If you’re not familiar with the concept, here’s everything you need to know about mirror gazing and more.
What Is Mirror Gazing?
Thinking of adding a few vanity mirrors around your home? Absolutely go for it! How else are you going to mirror gaze? It’s the process of making eye contact with yourself in the mirror and turning your attention inward; it’s not that different from meditation but without closing your eyes. It can be a very intimate moment as it forces you to focus on your thoughts while looking into your own eyes.
Increases Self-Compassion
Gazing at yourself in the mirror can make you feel uncomfortable because you have to look at your own imperfections and weaknesses. But the longer you engage in mirror gazing, the easier it might be for you to embrace those “flaws” and appreciate yourself in a more realistic manner. So what if you’re less than perfect? Everyone is like that and that doesn’t mean that you’re less worthy of love. Acknowledge what you have and who you are, embrace them, and forgive yourself for your mistakes.
Increases Your Emotional Awareness
For those who tend to push down difficult emotions so that they don’t have to deal with them tend to hide how they truly feel around other people. Your mirror, on the other hand, wont hide anything from you. Whatever unpleasant feelings you might have, you may be able to hide them behind a mask you wear but they can show in other areas of your body. By seeing these in the mirror, you might have no choice but to deal with them on a personal level in order to improve your overall body language.
Stronger Sense of Self
People are social animals, but there should be some you-time as well so that you can better know yourself. You are the best person to affirm and validate all of the traits and emotions that you’re feeling. Validation from others can be important, but it can also shred your self-worth if it comes with harsh criticism. Turn into your best friend who will stick up for you when needed.
How To Do Mirror Gazing
First, you need a mirror that is large enough for you to see your face. It should also be a mirror that can stand on its own so that you’re not holding one for ten minutes or more. Find a quiet and comfortable place to sit. Angle the mirror so that you can make eye contact with yourself. Set your timer for five minutes just to start out (you can increase the limit over time). Focus on your breathing and allow your body to relax. Look at yourself in the mirror and pay attention to the rhythm of your breathing. What thoughts come to mind? Do your emotions show on your face? Do you have a hard time looking at yourself? Ask yourself why and reflect on your thoughts in that moment.
Mirrors can be a great tool for checking out your appearance, but they can also help you to check in on your emotional state and see if you’re doing okay. They can help you to learn about self-love, compassion, and appreciating who you are as a person.
