The Natural Rhythms of Life

Resistance is futile yet we all do it. Instead of accepting the natural rhythms of life we fight against it and exhaust ourselves in the process. We forget to make the distinction between what we can and can’t control and spend hours agonising over events and experiences that we have little or no control over.

We resist in all sorts of ways. We yell and scream “why me?”, we engage in “if only” talk and we end up fretting over things that cause us unnecessary stress and anxiety. Instead of blowing on the sails of a boat in a crazy attempt to make life act according to our will, we sometimes need to sit down, take deep breaths and wait for a gust of wind to take us across the lake naturally. We still get to the same place and with a lot less effort if we respect the laws of nature. Life moves in ways that are balanced – think of the moon and the tides, the seasons of the year. After darkness comes the light, after scarcity comes abundance.

Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them – that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.

In everything there is an ebb and flow and the key to making life work for us is to work with life’s rhythms. Pick your timing, pick your pace and maximise your effect. Feelings will come and go and we need to trust the process. Eventually everything comes full circle. Our intensity and enthusiasm will come back, with the same focus or similar energy as before.

Trust the process that you are going through and know that whatever you are feeling now is fine. Give yourself time, you don’t have to take action right now. Whether you are in the ebb or flow, know that you will feel the opposite pull sooner or later and all you have to do is go with it.

Believe that life is unfolding as it should and that sometimes acceptance of current circumstances can take the anxiety out of the situation. Change is inevitable…
