Post Natal Depression

Having a baby is supposed to be one of the most joyous events in a woman’s life. There is so much pressure to jump into motherhood and excel at it. For many women, this reality is far from what they actually experience.

Hormones are raging, there’s pain and then obvious fatigue that comes with regularly waking up during the night. Post natal depression can appear suddenly or gradually. It is estimated that at least one in ten women suffer from post natal depression.

Common Symptoms of Post Natal Depression

  1. Guilt at not being able to cope or about not bonding with their child as much as they had expected.
  2. Feeling low and despondent.
  3. Irritable and/or tearful.
  4. Loss of appetite.
  5. Irrational intrusive thoughts (eg thoughts of harming their baby)
  6. Feeling animosity towards their baby or partner.
  7. Anxiety and panic attacks.
  8. Feeling self doubt and unable to cope

What To Do

Talk to others. Post natal depression is common and many women suffer in silence. Talking about your experiences allows others to feel they can talk too and you may be astounded at how others are going through the same as you.

Take time out for yourself. It’s important to recharge your batteries and feel emotionally and physically strong again in order to be a better mum.

Find out if there is a charity and/or support group near you for further help.

See your Doctor if the symptoms persevere. Counselling and psychotherapy can benefit someone experiencing post natal depression and help them to find themselves again.
