Power, status and emotional needs

This post is going to hold a lot of generalisations but I have definitely noticed a link between power, status and emotional needs. Let me explain. This post is about relationships and how it feels to date someone who is a workaholic. It’s from a female perspective but I imagine it happens in reverse too.

I have noticed many women married to corporate-types who are never at home. They financial rewards can be attractive but the consequence is a lonely life where your emotional needs aren’t met. I have found (again, a massive generalisation) that ambitious corporate men tend to lack emotional intelligence. They are logical and practical and have little time for how other people are feeling.

This is why I have seen many unhappily married (and emotionally neglected) women leave their husbands for the plumber, personal trainer or man doing the extension on their house. Yes – it would seem that men who work with their hands tend to have emotional intelligence, or at least more EQ than  a lawyer, CEO or merchant banker. Of course I have no scientific research to back any of this up but I have seen this happen time and time again and thought I would write my observations down. There must be something in it…

Is this the norm or the exception? I’d love to hear your thoughts…
