When life at home is a nightmare, there isn’t anywhere safe and calm. The psychological impact is huge and anxiety and depression are likely. Here are solutions to consider when life at home is a nightmare:

Do something outside the home

Find friends and activities away from home where possible. Even taking the dog for a walk can help with stress and perspective. When home life is unsupportive, do your best to expand your interests away from home.

Build up a network of friends, online forums

There are many forums online where you can talk to others going through a similar experience. There are also charities that can help and offer assistance. It can seem a very lonely existence but there are good people out there who care. believe that you have the strength to make the necessary changes. Small baby steps are key.

SHOUT service, The Samaritans – try these charities if you need advice.

Save money

Money offers choice and freedom so if at all possible – open up a private bank account in order to save some money in case you have to leave. Money helps you to feel more independent and powerful.

Find out more about coercive control and abusive relationships – it will help you understand what is going on at home. Hopefully, your stressful time at home is only temporary. Seek couples counselling if you need help repairing your relationship.
