Stop making social comparisons

Stop making social comparisons as it is a futile exercise that only serves to make you feel worse about yourself. No matter who you are or what you have, there will always be someone that you will be able to find to compare yourself unfavourably to. The problem with social comparisons is that we do this with little actual evidence. Our comparisons are based on our perceptions of others and our own insecurities. It’s human nature to be more critical of ourselves and see others as more successful, more happy, richer etc than we are.

It’s often a case of comparing our “behind the scenes footage” to another person’s “highlight reel”. Often, we think that someone is better than us in some way but what we are comparing is their appearance of seeming better rather than having real evidence for this.

Negative comparisons are wasted energy and leave us feeling that we  aren’t enough on some level. Why would you want to do that to yourself?

Instead, compare who you are today with who you were a year ago or two years ago – look at your own life and look at your progress. Or use social comparisons to feel gratitude for what you have – there will always be someone worse off than you but as we tend to live in ‘upwardly mobile’ societies we tend to focus on lack rather than what he appreciate/what we have.

So, stop making social comparisons – this one thing can help improve your happiness levels considerably.
