Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a worldwide organization that provides support and resources for people who are struggling with alcohol addiction. AA is based on the principles of the 12-step program, which involves admitting powerlessness over alcohol, seeking support from a higher power or spiritual source, and making amends for past mistakes.
AA meetings are typically held in person, although some groups may also offer online or phone meetings. Meetings are usually open to anyone who wants to attend, and are often structured around sharing personal experiences, discussing the principles of the 12-step program, and providing support and encouragement to fellow members.Alcoholism and drug addiction are often referred to as ” substance abuse” or “chemical dependency.” Alcoholics and nonalcoholics are, therefore, sometimes introduced to AA and encouraged to attend AA meetings.
Anyone may attend open AA meetings. An open meeting is open to the public, while a closed meeting is for members only.
The anonymity of AA members is an important aspect of the organization, and members are encouraged to maintain their anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films. This is intended to create a safe and supportive environment in which members can share their experiences and feelings without fear of judgment or stigma. AA is a self-supporting organization that does not accept funding or donations from outside sources. Members are encouraged to contribute financially to help cover the costs of running the organization, but no one is turned away from AA meetings for lack of funds.
AA members share their experience with anyone seeking help with a drinking problem; they give person-to-person service or “sponsorship” to the alcoholic coming to AA from any source. The AA program, set forth in the Twelve Steps, offers the alcoholic a way to develop a satisfying life without alcohol. This program is discussed at AA group meetings. Overall, AA provides a supportive community and resources for people who are struggling with alcohol addiction. While it may not be the right choice for everyone, it can be a valuable resource for those who are looking to overcome their addiction and improve their overall well-being.
