The growing trend of van living

The growing trend of van living has been borne out of the Covid pandemic. Many people suffered financial difficulties and as a result, had to give up their homes. The one thing that fascinated me about the pandemic was people’s abilities to adapt and adjust to their new circumstances. Van living is one good example.

What is van living?

It’s literally living in a van. People have bought vans and adapted them into a space to live with a bedroom, a small living area that doubles up as a workspace, and a small kitchen. They sleep over at camping sites where they use the shower and toilet facilities and this is how they provide accommodation for themselves at a fraction of the cost! When you are worried about your finances, over a period of time it can affect your mental health and cause ongoing anxiety or possibly even depression in the long term.

Why is living in a van a good idea?

Firstly, it saves you a lot of money. If you’re renting, you are no longer paying towards someone else’s mortgage. It’s possible to save up to GBP900.00 per month and possibly more. Working arrangements have changed too, with many people working from home. Living in a van means you can still work and earn money as long as you have access to a good internet signal.

Of course, there are downsides – cramped living conditions and variable access to a toilet and freshwater. Still, if you have a good routine and know where to go – it could be a fun and practical option. Some people are living in vans temporarily.

They are using the time to travel and see new places whilst saving for a deposit for a home they will buy one day. Seems a logical way to go about things, especially if you live alone or it’s just you and your partner.

Take a look at this video to find out more about living in a van – a good example of maximing space.

So, living in a van is always an option and could be quite an adventure!
