The eyes are often a billboard for showcasing the signs of aging. They showcase many of our best memories in the form of laugh lines. However, your eyes also highlight sleepless nights and struggles in the form of dark circles and bags. As such, it’s no wonder why blepharoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures.

Careful consideration is essential before undergoing a cosmetic procedure. If you’ve been considering blepharoplasty, here are some key things you need to know.

The Purpose of Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is a form of eyelid surgery that’s meant to correct excess skin and drooping. The procedure itself will depend on your unique appearance and desired changes. The surgeon could focus on either the upper or lower lids, or both. The surgeon may remove skin, fat, and even alter the muscles in the area to create a taut, alert presentation.

The surgeon, like Dr. Kopelman, could focus on either the upper or lower lids, or both. While many people have this procedure as aesthetic surgery, there’s a practical purpose as well. If your skin is hanging in such a way that it impedes your vision, making it challenging to drive or function on a day-to-day basis, blepharoplasty can help. In some situations, the corrective surgery will even be covered by insurance.

What Happens During the Procedure

The first step in a blepharoplasty is a consultation with your chosen surgeon. During this appointment, you’ll be asked a few questions regarding what you’re looking for. This appointment is also an opportunity to go over your health history, including pre-existing conditions, medications (including herbal supplements) that you might be taking, etc.

During the consultation, the surgeon will take photos and run a few tests pertaining to your vision. They may mark your skin and outline their approach as well.

The procedure is typically an outpatient procedure completed with a local anesthetic. However, more complex operations sometimes require anesthesia— your surgeon will outline what’s right for you during the consultation.

The surgeon will perform the procedure by making small cuts in the eyelids and removing or adjusting tissue as needed. This type of aesthetic surgery is relatively quick, often only lasting an hour or so.

The Blepharoplasty Recovery Experience

Immediately following the procedure, you’ll be moved to the recovery room and monitored. You’ll likely experience blurred vision, pain and discomfort, swelling, and light sensitivity. These effects generally dissipate within a few days. You will need someone to drive you home, and likely won’t be able to drive for a few days after the procedure.

The full recovery period is around two weeks. During that time, you won’t be able to wear contacts, smoke cigarettes, or do any strenuous lifting or exercise. You might have to wear sunglasses to combat the light sensitivity.

How Long Does Blepharoplasty Last?

A well-performed blepharoplasty can last over ten years. It’s important to know that this isn’t a permanent procedure, and gravity eventually wins out. You can maintain the results with supporting procedures, such as Botox.

Proper skincare routines will also help maintain the results for longer. Ensure you’re adequately hydrating, protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays, and following a nourishing skincare routine.

How to Find the Right Surgeon

Look for a reputable, licensed surgeon who focuses on aesthetic facial surgeries. The more experience they have with one area, the better the results will be. Look for recommendations and reviews online, and don’t hesitate to ask questions during your consultation

While working with a surgeon who focuses on blepharoplasty is a must, it’s also helpful when they have experience in performing supporting facial procedures. Working with one surgeon over time ensures consistent, knowledge-based results.

Keep these key considerations in mind when determining whether blepharoplasty is right for you.
