Top 10 mental health apps endorsed by mental health expert
Whilst no app has yet been invented that can replace human face-to-face interactions such as counselling with a mental health expert, there are a number of excellent apps that offer great support and guidance to enhance your wellbeing. I have personally looked at many mental health apps and have found these ten mental health apps to be the best out there.
As a mental health expert, I can tell whether a mental health app is delivering on it’s promises or whether it is just another marketing gimmick. There were a few other close contenders but these ten offer a wonderful, comprehensive array of guidance, information and support to help you navigate this crazy thing called life. I absolutely love the simplicity of this app. A client made me aware of this app and I decided to take a look. As a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, I am always harping on about FOCUS. Where are you focusing? The majority of what you focus on will create your reality and can lead to self fulfilling prophecies. When we focus on the negatives, we can end up inviting kore negatoves into our life – believe it or not. it’s true! This app teaches you to be more aware of your focus.
Plant a tree when you want to focus and a tree will grow. if you leave the app the tree dies. See how good you can become at focusing and growing a beautiful forest! Stay focused, be present. A great app for keeping you in the present moment and for promoting mindfulness.

This app provides a great service for those who feel isolated, depressed or anxious and just need someone to talk to. With this app, you can connect instantly with one of 160,000 trained volunteer listeners and licensed therapists. The conversations are anonymous, free & confidential. It also gives the option to connect with multiple users and to participate in guided discussions in group support chat rooms.
If you are feeling lonely, sad, stressed, or worried, 7 Cups could be the perfect app for you. It provides online therapy and emotional support for anxiety and depression. Speak your mind and confide in listeners without the fear of being judged.
These listeners can be searched for based on their experience or their specialties, such as bullying, panic attacks, eating disorders, relationship breakups, and many more.
This is a very popular app and many of my clients use it. Named by Apple as the 2017 iPhone App of the Year, Calm provides people experiencing stress and anxiety with guided meditations, sleep stories, breathing programs, and relaxing music. Whether you’ve never tried meditation before or regularly practice, you’ll find the perfect program for you.
Another popular and well known app: Headspace makes meditation simple. Learn the skills of mindfulness and meditation by using this app for just a few minutes per day. You gain access to hundreds of meditations on everything from stress and anxiety to sleep and focus. The app also has a handy “get some headspace” reminder to encourage you to keep practicing each day.
We live in such a fast paced world and this app supports mindfulness. It helps you to slow down and minimises anxiety. Many of my clients use this one too!

If you’re a worrier – this is the one for you. Worry is the biggest waste of mental energy there is. Learn to manage your worry with the help of this app. One of the most frustrating parts of living with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder can be dealing with intense anxiety despite the fact you know your worries are irrational. Worry Watch aims to help users identify their trigger points for anxiety, note trends in their feelings, reflect on when the outcomes were harmless, and change their thinking patterns for the future. Think of it as your personal, password-protect, worry diary.
Moodpath is your pocket-sized mental health companion. Whether you are facing a rough patch or have concerns about your mental health, the app’s goal is to support you through the difficult times and guide you out the other side.
Moodpath asks daily questions in order to assess your well-being and screen for symptoms of depression. The screening progress aims to increase your awareness of your thoughts, emotions, and feelings.

This App was created to help you with stress and worry. It contains science based activities and games to elevate happiness. You can choose a personalized happiness track created by experts. This app enables you to reduce stress and anxiety through guided relaxation/meditation. With this app you can gain insights and track your progress over time. I especially like the fact that this app guides you and shows you how to train your brain to overcome negative thoughts. Brilliant, and again, in line with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (what I specialise in) to improve a person’s mood and wellbeing.
I highly recommend the above 10 mental health apps. I have them all on my phone and recommend them regularly to clients to help them inbetween our CBT sessions. They work very well on their own as well as in conjunction with counselling. We are fortunate enough to have all this help at our finger tips and I wanted to put the best apps all in one place for your ease of reference. Happy ‘apping’!!!
